Martha Granger, 91, Dies at Fulton Home

"Mrs. Martha Granger, known in Santa Rosa as the "Mother of the D.A.R." died yesterday at the age of 91.

Daughter of one of the patriots who fought for the independence of the United States in the Revolutionary war, Mrs. Granger organized the Santa Rosa chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Death claimed the beloved nonagenarian at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Edith Hawkes of Fulton, where she had lived for many years. Mrs. Hawkes, assistant postmaster at Fulton, is a member of the Santa Rosa Symphony orchestra board and has been a newspaper correspondent for years.

Mrs. Granger, widow of the late Ransom E. Granger, had lived in Fulton since 1906, having moved there from Kalamazoo, Michigan. In addition to her work with the D.A.R., Mrs. Granger was interested in the establishment of a museum for Sonoma county historical objects and at the time of her death was actively interested in a movement which would bring to the county a place to house relics which she possessed.

Until recently, she had assisted Mrs. Hawkes, recognized as an authority in plants and gardening, in the garden of the home.

A brother, F. B. Munsell of Chicago, and three grandchildren, Mrs. Emil Eggersgluess of Woodland, Allan T. Baum of San Diego, and Donald H. Baum of Chico, survive in addition to Mrs. Hawkes.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock in Welti's chapel, with the Reverend Gradon F. McClelland officiating. The body will be taken to Oakland for cremation."

Mrs. Granger's Death Saddens D.A.R. Group She Organized In 1925

"The death of Mrs. Martha J. Granger, organizing mother of Santa Rosa Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, in Fulton yesterday morning cast a shadow of sorrow over the meeting of the chapter that was held yesterday afternoon in Santa Rosa at the home of Mrs. Carrie Brown Dexter.

Mrs. Granger, who had lived in Fulton since 1906, called a meeting of interested women on December 15, 1925, and while they were together the formation of the Santa Rosa chapter was effected. Mrs. H. J. Mannhart, state regent at that time, was present to represent the California chapter.

Not being interested in holding office, Mrs. Granger at that time accepted only the place of chaplain, and was re-elected year after year until forced to give up the work on account of her health.

Early days in local D.A.R. activities were recalled by members of the chapter yesterday. They spoke of Mrs. Granger's interest in the organization of her contributions to the Santa Rosa Museum.

The D.A.R. organizer was born in Michigan in 1846. She was the mother of Mrs. Edith Granger Hawkes with who she made her home, and the grandmother of Mrs. Emil Eggersgluess of Woodland, the former Miss Eleanor Hawkes."
