Letter to Charmian - 1941

Nell (Griffith) Wilson is mentioned again by Edith (see the previous 1940 letter). The other women mentioned were active members of the Sonoma County Branch of the League of American Pen Women. Mrs. Kellogg would have been Byrd Weyler Kellogg (author of the article Branch History) and Mrs. Murphy was probably Celeste G. Murphy, vice president of the Branch while Edith as president.

Typed note at top of the letter:

O.K. I’ll do it, but hope after New Year’s. I must TALK ABOUT JACK LONDON, FARMER. Asked how much space in time, etc.

(I have wondered if this is Charmian’s own note to herself?)

Santa Rosa, Calif., Oct. 26, 1941.

Dear Charmian,--

Isn’t this a quick follow-up? But I had a phone talk with Mrs. Kellogg after I got home, and while it’s fresh in my mind I want to tell you her reactions about the radio business. She agrees with me that if you were to take part in a radio program with the Branch, as its most distinguished member, it would not, or ought not, to subject you to any unwanted applications or complaints.

Her idea would be to have a sort of Round Table, not a quiz, but a talk with an interlocutor (I think she could be persuaded to do that part), this giving you a chance to say whatever you wanted to. on any subject you might choose. And you have had so many interesting experiences, you must be full of things to tell. We’ve had samples. I won’t ask you to answer right now, but do be thinking about it, please. It would give us such a good send off for the introductory program. After that, we might have one by Mrs. Murphy on her Valley, one for poets, one for artists, etc. Don’t you really think it sounds possible and interesting?

I’m so very glad you came yesterday, and hope you enjoyed it enough so you will repeat whenever you are at home. Probably the next meeting will be at Nell Wilson’s.

With love,

Edith
