Fulton Couple to Wed

A marriage license was issued here Monday to W.H. Hawkes and Miss Edith Granger, both of Fulton.

Edith Granger Weds Wm. Hawkes of Fulton

There was a pretty wedding occurred Tuesday at high noon at the home of the bride's mother, when William Hawkes, a well-to-do farmer of Fulton, claimed as his bride Miss Edith Granger, one of the Fulton's popular young ladies. The bride looked very sweet in her dainty white dress. The wedding was a quiet affair, there being only the immediate relatives of the contracting parties present. After the ceremony, performed by Rev. W.M. Sutherland, a delightful wedding breakfast was served. The wedding presents were many and valuable. The bride and groom left in an automobile for Santa Rosa, where they boarded a train for San Francisco and other bay cities for their wedding trip.

William Sues Edith Hawkes for Divorce

In the Superior Court here yesterday William Hawkes sued his wife, Edith Hawkes for a divorce. Ross Campbell Is the attorney for the plaintiff.

William and Edith were divorced by the time of the 1920 Census, but I have not yet confirmed the exact date. The above clipping was from July 1917 so depending on how long the process took, we could guess they were divorced at some time between 1917 and 1920. However, according her mother, a separation would have occurred around 1911 or 1912. In Chapter 26 of Martha's autobiographical manuscript, she states "In 1908 my daughter married a neighboring rancher, and I was alone for three and a half years. Then she lost her husband, and with a baby daughter came home to live with me again, and we have been together ever since." I would have to speculate that either Martha was uncomfortable talking about a separation or divorce (which is very possible considering she leaves out any mention of her first husband from her manuscript) or maybe Edith and William's marriage was not a good one and not one to be remembered in her "Memories." Martha may have also remembered the timing incorrectly when she sat down to write her story.
